FRAMES FOR CANVAS PAINTINGS & PRINTS

Framing a canvas often begins with stretching it over a frame. It can simply be displayed like this, however adding a frame can really bring the painting to life. A simple tray frame or traditional rebated frame may be the solution.

STEP 3

Constructing the frame

All stretcher frames are made bespoke for the type of canvas you have, and how deep it needs to be.
First, the stretcher frame is assembled and squared off, before positioning the canvas to stretch it.

Securing the canvas

Positioning the canvas onto the frame with the aid of tools for equal tension across the surface.
The canvas is stapled on the reverse of the frame ready for the next stage.

Finishing touches/Ready for framing

The stretched canvas is now sealed at the back with tape and finished with wall mountings ready to hang.
Or, if the canvas is being framed, it is now ready for the next step.

CANVAS FRAMING OPTIONS

Here is a simple guide to show you the options for framing your canvas.

1. THE FLOATING CANVAS

The canvas is stretched over a frame and ready to be framed.
Tray, or floater frames are popular for contemporary canvas artworks and are available in various colours & finishes.
This example shows the stages of framing a canvas into a tray frame with a regular, rebated frame around the outer edge. This enables the finished effect to be that of a normal frame but without losing any of the canvas under the rebate. In effect, it is floating!

2. REBATED FRAME FOR CANVAS & BOARDS

This option is the simplest way to frame your artwork on canvas, and usually without glass… although there are exceptions to the rule. Spacers or liners can be added to prevent your picture touching the glass, reducing the chance of damaging your artwork over time.

There are a wide range of options here, from simple frames to decorative in a whole spectrum of colours.
