What Is a Box Frame?

A box frame is made for any artwork, artefact, or object which needs extra space to house it under the glass. Unlike a standard frame, a box frame has depth. This allows room for items that sit proud of the backing mount.

Framing medals is one example of using this process, but box frames can also be made for:

• 3D artworks
• Books
• Memorabilia
• Baby shoes and keepsakes
• Military or service medals
• Collectables
• Handmade crafts
• Any object you wish to frame

Designs for box frames can simply be a practical way to protect a 3D item, or they can create something with real wow factor. Some clients want clean and minimal. Others want bold and dramatic. We design it together.

HOW WE MAKE YOUR BOX FRAME

Every box frame is made carefully in my Morningthorpe workshop near Long Stratton. The process requires patience and accuracy, especially when positioning meaningful or delicate objects.

ITEMS ARE SECURED ONTO A BACKING MOUNT

The first step is preparing and securing the item onto a backing mount. This must be done thoughtfully so the object is supported properly and displayed attractively.

Positioning is key. Even a few millimetres can make the difference between something looking balanced and not quite right.

THE ‘BOX’ LINING OR SPACERS ARE ADDED BEHIND THE GLASS

The ‘box’ lining or spacers create the depth inside the frame. This ensures the glass does not press against the object. It also allows the item to sit comfortably within the frame.

For some projects, the box depth is subtle. For others, especially layered or textured pieces, more space is required.

THE BACKING MOUNT IS PINNED INTO THE 'BOX' FRAME

Once the object is secured and positioned correctly, the backing mount is carefully pinned into the box structure inside the frame.

This stage brings everything together. The piece begins to feel complete.

A Box Project, Patience and Precision

Here is an insight into the process of preparing artwork ready for its frame. It is often the most enjoyable, and sometimes the most challenging, part of any framing project.

This aspect requires the most patience. Each item must be accurately placed, secured, and checked before the frame is sealed. The goal is simple: when you hang your framed article, it should look effortless and balanced.

Behind that simplicity is time, care, and experience.

Popular Box Framing Projects in South Norfolk

Across Long Stratton, Norwich, and Diss, box framing is often chosen for meaningful and personal items.

Medal Framing

Military and service medals are frequently framed using a box frame to give them the space they require. Medals often sit alongside certificates, photographs, or service records.

If you have medals that deserve respectful and careful presentation, I would be happy to advise.

Framing Books & Paper Objects

A box frame for a book allows the cover and spine to be displayed while protecting the structure of the book itself. This works beautifully for first editions, gifted books, or sentimental items.

Framing 3D Artwork & Objects

Some artworks are naturally three-dimensional. Textured art, layered craft pieces, or sculptural elements benefit from the depth of a box frame.

Each project is different. That is why consultation matters.
